Use Twitter to promote your organisation
Whilst Facebook is
useful for communicating with your 'fans', Twitter is a good way to
interact with people who have no link to your organisation.
Five steps to terrific tweeting
Start following...
1. Choose a name – this obviously needs to be unique so ‘smiths’ won’t be available. As with most things on the web, think what people are likely to search for.
2. Talk up your events – there’s no point telling the world every time you break wind but it is important to update Twitter fairly regularly. You can email updates via Twittermail rather than logging in each time. You can even write a few weeks worth of Tweets in advance and set up an email programme (e.g. Outlook) to automatically send your updates periodically.
3. Be a tease – with only a few characters to play with, it’s better to leave people guessing. For example, “New cupcake flavour out tomorrow at 10am - it'll leave your tongue fizzing!”.
4. Use a short url - if your website is long, you can end your ‘tweet’ with your web address condensed into a ‘tiny url’ by following the site’s simple instructions.

5. Increase your number of followers - there are lots of techniques for picking up followers, which involve mass marketing, huge budgets and selling your soul.
The quickest, easiest (and free) way is to search for people near to you and then start following them. Many of them will start following you in return and your messages will then appear when they log into. You can also put a 'follow me' button on your website.
